Heute war Willems 2. Geburtstag. Wir konnten es schon gar nicht mehr erwarten, da wir uns so darauf gefreut haben, dass er seine grosse Lego-Duplo Eisenbahn auspackt, die seit Wochen im vorderen Zimmer auf ihren ersten Einsatz wartete. Das Warten hat sich gelohnt: Willem quietschte beim Auspacken vor lauter Entzücken!

Zunächst musste der Teppich im Wohnzimmer an eine andere Stelle gelegt werden, da das Verlegen der Gleise eine glatte Unterlage verlangte. Nachdem die Gleisbauarbeiten beendet waren, dauerte es nicht lange bevor Willem die Regie übernahm, den Zug auf die Gleise stellte und die batteriebetriebene Lok per Knopfdruck in Bewegung setzte.

Noch ein König - Another King

Auch beim Schlafengehen ist ein neues Kapitel aufgeschlagen worden. Seit heute hat Willem eine richtige Bettdecke und zum ersten Mal anstatt eines Strampelanzugs einen Pyjama an, und wie man sieht, er findet's fantastisch.

Guckguck - Peepo

Im Kindergarten hat Mücki jetzt den 'Umzug' in den Raum der grossen Kinder (2-5) begonnen. Es ist toll zu sehen, wie er täglich Fortschritte beim Eingewöhnen macht. Nachdem er zuächst nur für 1-2 Stunden vom Baby-Raum aus zu Besuch bei den Grossen war, wurden die Exkursionen immer etwas länger, wurde dann auch dort zu mittag gegessen, Mittagsschlaf gehalten, auch nachmittags dort gespielt, bis er heute zum allerersten Mal morgens gar nicht mehr in den Baby-Raum gegangen ist. Das ist einerseits schön aber auch zugleich traurig, da es bedeutet, dass er die gewohnte Umgebung des Baby-Raums und die netten Kindergärtnerinnen, besonders Dawn und Lindsey, die für uns zur erweiterten Familie gehören, jetzt zurück lässt.

It was Willem's 2nd Birthday today. We have been excitedly looking forward to this for weeks, as it meant that finally the new Lego train set got it's first outing at last. The long wait was worth it: Willem squeaked with delight when he unpacked the box.

After we had completed all the track works, it didn't take long until Willem would take charge by putting the train onto the tracks and managing to push the button that would set the battery operated engine into motion.

We've also opened a new chapter at bedtime: our big boy is now in big boy PJs rather than romper suits - and he's now got his own duvet courtesy of the Richartz kids who kindly donated this to their little friend. So kind! Thank you!! As you can see from the pictures, Willem absolutely loves it. And for once he didn't fuss at bedtime (probably at least partly to be attributed to the fact that he was too exhausted to kick up a stink. Even more exhausted than usual, that is). Fingers crossed for a quiet night!...

At nursery, Willem is in the process of moving to the big kids' room. He has been spending more and more time over there in the last couple of weeks and has taken to it like a duck to water. Today was the first day that Hendrik dropped him off in there without first going to the baby room. Until a few days ago this would have still caused tears, but today he was ready for it. A milestone. We're glad he likes it so much in the big kids' room, but we're also shedding a secretive tear that this means we won't see that much of everyone in the baby room, especially Dawn and Lindsey who seem to have become parts of our extended family... The move probably bothers Thea more than it does Willem, though...

Well, we'll now get the Häagen Dazs out and enjoy a quiet night on the sofa. All that sitting around on the floor perched next to rail tracks is poison to 40-year old backsides...

Weihnachten — Christmas break

Meine Güte, es ist schon so lang her, dass wir etwas von uns gebloggt haben. Wie für wahrscheinlich alle von Euch war auch für uns die Zeit vor Weihnachten sehr hektisch, also war es mal wieder nichts mit dem 'jetzt-mal-langsam-runterfahren-und-entspannen'.

Wir sind über Weihnachten nach D gefahren. Aufgrund des schlechten Wetters und des realistischen Szenarios, dass man im Schnee stecken bleiben könnte, sind wir mustergültig ausgerüstet aufgebrochen und hatten Schlafsäcke, Klappspaten, Campingkocher und ausreichend Essen und Trinken dabei. Als ich am Tag vor unserem Aufbruch im Schneegestöber zu unserem Container gefahren bin, um die Expeditionsausrüstung zusammenzusuchen, habe ich meinen Ehering im Schnee verloren. Schlechter Urlaubsstart! Am nächsten Morgen bin ich im Hellen wieder hin gefahren, aber habe den Ring trotz archaeologisch anmutender Suchaktion nicht wiedergefunden.

Erst wollte Willem unbedingt mitfahren, dann war er froh als es vorbei war - Willem was keen at first, but then could it not be over soon enough...

Trotz des Schneechaos verlief unsere Reise zur Fähre ohne grössere Probleme, und wir waren so früh an Bord wie nie zuvor. Die Reise auf dem Kontinent am nächsten Tag hingegen war grauenvoll. Während die Strassen in NL noch hervorragend frei waren, wurde die Situation schlagartig schlechter als wir die deutsche Grenze passiert haben. Am Ende hat es 11.5h gedauert, um nach Hause zu kommen. Nie wieder können wir mit gutem Gewissen über die Engländer und ihr gestörtes Verhältnis zu Schnee lästern!... Obwohl unser Aufenthalt eher kurz war, so haben wir es doch geschafft ein paar Freunde zu treffen, und natürlich Weihnachten mit den Familien verbracht. Wir haben uns völlig undiszipliniert allen Genüssen hingegeben, und daher sind Diät und Bewegung keine guten Vorsätze sondern eine absolute Notwendigkeit.

PS: Nachdem wir wieder in GB angekommen sind, war der Schnee gerade geschmolzen, und ich habe, unglaublich aber wahr, meinen Ehering wiedergefunden.

Wow, it has been a long time indeed. Now, probably like most other folk, the end of year was fairly hectic for us and despite the best intentions, winding down slowly before Christmas was simply not an option.

Ski und Rodel gut - Excellent snow, great sleighing

This year we travelled to Germany for Christmas. Due to the bad weather and the real chance of getting stuck with car in the snow somewhere, we decided to go prepared with sleeping bags, folding spade, camping stove and plenty of food and drink. While organising these items from our storage container on the day before we set off, the same day that the Midlands got a 4 inch cover of snow, I managed to lose my wedding band; I went back the next day during daylight to perform an archaeological dig in the snow - but did not manage to find it. Not a great start to the holidays.

At least our journey to the ferry was ok, we managed to get on board well in time. The journey the next day was not great, it took us 11.5 h to get home from the ferry. Despite a relatively short stay in Germany, we managed to see a few friends and of course spend time over Christmas with the families. We totally overindulged over Christmas and the New Year, and changing our ways (diet and exercise) is not just a New Year's resolution, but an absolute necessity. PS: After returning home to the UK, the snow had just melted, and I managed to find my wedding band at the container. It was slightly battered but most scratches have come off with a good polishing at the jeweller's. What a good start to the New Year!

Heute ist Halloween. Zwar hat es in Europa eigentlich überhaupt keine 'Tradition", dennoch wird es eingehend zelebriert. Kinder laufen von Haus zu Haus, um Süssigkeiten zu sammeln, oder im Falle, dass ebensolche nicht ausgegeben werden, Unsinn zu veranstalten (engl. "trick or treat"), und allenthalben sind verzierte Kürbisse zu bewundern. Natürlich wurde Halloween am Freitag auch im Kindergarten gefeiert, und dazu durften die Kinder sich verkleiden. Passenderweise hat Thea für Mücki ein Kürbiskostüm gefunden. Heute haben wir auch Kürbisse ausgehölt und Willem ist nocheinmal in sein Kostüm geschlüpft. Happy Halloween!

Quality Control

It is Halloween today. Although not really a European tradition, it is quite a big thing these days. The children are going from door to door doing trick-or-treat and there are carved pumpkins everywhere. On Friday, the nursery also had a Halloween do and the children could come in fancy dress. Thea found a great pumpkin outfit for Willem, which he had on all day. Today we carved our own pumpkins in the garden and Willem tried out his costume once more. Happy Halloween!

Goa

Thea und Willem waren eine Woche allein zuhaus, da ich zu einer Konferenz nach Goa (Indien) eingeladen war. Beinahe wäre aus dem Trip nichts geworden (Mandelentzündung), aber Penicillin sei Dank, war ich rechtzeitig zur Abreise wieder einigermassen fit. Von Goa habe ich neben der Konferenz allerdings nicht viel mitbekommen, das was ich gesehen habe erinnerte mich einerseits an Bali (Reisfelder, der Verkehr), wobei es verglichen mit Bali sehr viel weniger gepflegt wirkte, und ausserdem der portugiesische Einfluss an vielen Ecken zu sehen ist. Mücki war genauso froh wie ich darüber, dass ich wieder da bin. Bis Weihnachten ist jetzt erstmal Schluss mit Reisen.

Thea and Willem spent a week home alone, while I was off for a conference in Goa (India). The trip very nearly didn't happen at all, but thanks to penicillin, I was ok to travel just in time. There wasn't really any time at all to explore Goa, but what I did see reminded me of Bali (rice paddies, the way the traffic works), yet Goa is much less well kept than Bali and there is ample evidence of the time it was a Portuguese colony. Willem was just as glad as I was that I was back after a week - and I am not keen to go anywhere until Christmas.

Das Ende einer Ära — The End of an Era

Es ist das Ende einer Ära, in vielerlei Hinsicht.

Gestern Abend haben wir uns von Sophie und Philippe Jouan verabschiedet, und wie so oft zuvor war es eine super Party. Nach beinahe 9 Jahren in Leamington zieht es sie nach Nashville, Tennessee – wir werden sie vermissen. Die beiden sind unsere ältesten Freunde hier, nachdem bereits viele andere unserer Freunde aus der Anfangszeit weitergezogen sind. Obwohl es schade ist, die beiden gehen zu sehen, so sind wir doch auch etwas neidisch, dass sie woanders neu anfangen.

Aber nicht nur Sophie und Philippe beginnen ein neues Kapitel: Nach fast sechs Jahren, in denen Thea zwei Doctoral Training Centres der Universität gemanaged hat, fängt sie im November einen neuen Job an und wird Technical Services Manager im Department of Chemistry. Aufregend! Sie wird für die Leitung von 20 Technischen Angestellten verantwortlich sein und sich um die tagtägliche ("tachtähchlich" für Herrn Fritsch☺) Instandhaltung der Gebäude (inklusive eines £24 Millionen Neubaus, der zur Zeit hochgezogen wird) und Infrastruktur kümmern. Schau'n 'mer mal wie das so gehen wird!

Willem macht deutliche Fortschritte mit dem Sprechen, sein Vokabular wird von Tag zu Tag umfangreicher, auch wenn einiges zur Zeit nur von Eingeweihten verstanden werden kann. Er lernt sowohl Deutsch (zu Hause) als auch Englisch (im Kindergarten) und benutzt zum Teil deutsche Worte nur in unserer Gegenwart und Englisch im Kindergarten. Wenn er sich uns allerdings trotz aller Fortschritte nicht mitteilen kann, kommt grosse Frustration auf. Immerhin, wir werden immer besser darin zu raten, was er meinen könnte, und es besteht die vage Hoffnung darauf, dass irgendwann wieder Friede einkehrt im Schäferschen Haushalt...


It's the end of an era in more than one sense.

Yesterday, we joined Sophie and Philippe Jouan for their big farewell bash. After almost nine years in Leamington, they're now moving on to Nashville, Tennessee in a few days. We'll miss them! They have been our longest-serving friends over here. Everyone else we got to know in those early days has already moved on. While we're sad to see Sophie and Philippe go, we're also a bit envious that they are moving to start something new!

But it's not just Sophie and Philippe who are starting a new chapter: After nearly six years managing two Doctoral Training Centres at Warwick, Thea is going to start a new job in November as Technical Services Manager for the Chemistry Department. Exciting times! She'll be managing 20 technical staff and looking after the buildings (including the £24M new build that is currently being pulled up) and facilities. We'll see how that goes - watch this space!

Little big Willem is on the cusp of starting to talk properly. He is learning more and more words, both in German and English, and is SO keen to communicate properly. At times, incredible frustration takes hold of him because he can't make us understand what he wants. But we're getting better at guessing and he gets better and better at articulating simple words. I am sure that in time we'll have peace reinstated in the Schäfer household...
