Die Raupe Nimmersatt — The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Was mir völlig fehlt, ist etwas Bewegung.

G'day from the island!

I figure it is time for an update, given that the previous post suggested we were not having the best of times and some of you have got worried. So, in a nutshell: things are getting better (or our resilience is improving...). Both Thea and Willem have been discharged by the midwives, meaning that they are well enough and need a little less attention now. We have already had a visit from the Health Visitor, who is taking over from the midwives now.

After Willem had lost a bit too much weight, we started topping him up with formula. This has worked well and he has been piling on the ounces since then. On Sunday a week ago he was back to birth weight (3670g), and on Tuesday he was already at 3870g. He feeds like the Very Hungry Caterpillar and he has already grown out of his first set of clothes; he is doing well.

I have gone back to work and get the odd sympathetic glance by colleagues who have been there before (ie. sleep deprivation). Besides sleep I am lacking exercise. I have not been to the gym for a good three weeks now. Hence the decision to cycle to work again now and again, let's see how often I will really manage.

Willkommen zu Hause — Welcome Home

"Reisevorbereitungen" - Getting ready to leave hospital

Ein extra Gepäckstück - an additional piece of luggage

Eine ruhige Minute - A moment of peace

On my way to visit Thea and Willem at the hospital on Sunday, I took the car seat with me in case that the two would be discharged. In the hospital car park I then struggled to get it out of the seat base, despite tugging and pulling away at it with force - not a chance; I was seriously impressed and convinced of the safety of the car seat. On the other hand, it is child's play, if one presses the right button, as people who read instructions would have surely known. RTFM!
Anyway, Thea was
indeed discharged, as she was able to tick all the boxes of the can-this-mum-be-released-into-the-wild-checklist, and despite the advanced hour (nearly 9 pm) we went home with Willem.
The next two nights were hell, just as anyone has been kind enough to point out recently, usually answered by me with "we'll be fine" - well, we were not. Not a quiet minute, altogether three hours of sleep (two for me, one for Thea). It is amazing how quickly such a little man can scream himself into a right rage. Wonder where he's got that from. (Schäfer family, no comments required, thank you!) On Monday we felt completely knackered. I went back to hospital to pick up a prescription for Dorothea. The rough night must have shown, one of the midwives talked to Thea on the phone and kept pointing out that "your husband looks absolutely shattered
". Oh dear. The next night was not much of an improvement. The midwife who visited on Tuesday recommended we top up the breast feed with formula as Willem had lost too much weight. We immediately started doing that and the next night has already been an improvement as Willem slept much better and was more content. It's also been fun for Dad, as giving little one the bottle is a very satisfying bit of dad-time. Jenny was back on Thursday morning and another weighing of Willem has shown that the top-up is working as he has gained weight. His appetite is increasing every day, sometimes I wonder where all that milk is going (that is until the nappy change).

We have continued to be busy, which is underlined by the fact that I have not managed to put this post online for two days now. Yesterday evening, we had a surprise visitor: Dorothea's boss Alison knocked on the door. She brought food and seeing that we were knackered she did a round of shopping for us. Thank you so much Alison, that was such a great help. We really appreciate it.

Anyway, despite all this it looks as if we are getting into the swing of things now, but the next few weeks are bound to be rough.

Willem Theodor ist da — Willem Theodor has arrived

Mum and son had to be patient and resilient, but all ended well. On Tuesday 10 February 2009 at 18.12h Willem Theodor Schäfer was born at Warwick hospital weighing in at 8 lbs 1 oz. After a good nights sleep both mum and Willem are doing well and we are very happy with our new arrival. That's it for now, more of the little man will follow soon.

Let it snow...

Goodness, we've had some snow! A rare event in England, and rather a sparse dusting of the white stuff in these parts. Thus, no snow chaos in our back yard, rather we could have done with a bit more to conceal the mess. Being from the North of Germany, we cannot claim to be seasoned by siberian-type winters, but it is still hard to comprehend how a little bit of snow can bring the country to a complete stand still. Ok, I can understand it a bit where there has been significant snowfall, but not having any snow ploughs does not help. You cannot buy snow tyres either! The link leads to a cute little audio slide show on the wintry weather by the beeb. Anyway, it still looks great!

Warten auf "Karl-Heinz" — Waiting for "Karl-Heinz"

Heute beginnt Woche 40.
Karl-Heinz, kannst kommen...

It's the start of week 40 today. Hard to say whether time has passed slowly or quickly, but clearly we are on the home straight now, very close to getting to know "Karl-Heinz" - finally!
Thea is feeling very close to bursting. For a few days now everything is that little bit more difficult: Tying shoe laces, pipcking up things that have dropped to the floor, turning around in bed - none of these happen without being accompanied by grunting noises...

Surprisingly (for those of you knowing our tendency to do everything at the last-minute) we are - more or less - ready. A whole week before the due date! What used to be the guest room (and laundry-cum-storage room) is now the nursery. The cot is in our bedroom and the pram is parked next to the front door. Come on "Karl-Heinz"...

Willkommen! — Welcome!
