Gartenumbau — Garden Improvements

Während des Umbaus - Halfway there...

Back from holiday we waisted no time on the sofa as we used the last day of our vacation to clear out the garden, which was to be redone starting the next day. The gravel that covered much of the ground had seemed useful and low maintenance when we bought the house 8 years ago, but getting those prickly leaves of the holly out by hand was hard and painful work. Moreover, the garden did not really lend itself to playing outside with Willem.

Two weeks later, it is almost finished, the final touches have been held up by the changeable weather during the last week. Nevertheless, we went to a huge garden centre today to get some plants, as we cannot wait to get digging in.

The flowerbeds have been raised, the gravel had to make way for cedar decking and paving, which is both much better for entertaining and playing. A sandpit has been ordered too. It now feels like an extra room, and we are eager to inaugurate it with a BBQ.

  1. Excellent! I remember you telling us of your plans for the space, three years ago ;) It looks lovely. Might want to invest in a canopy for the inevitable summer rain?

  2. Our thoughts exactly, Hez! We have already got a canopy (impulse buy) that needs customizing (to fit our pea sized garden) that's been waiting in the loft since we first started thinking about doing the garden up. I know. I always do things in the wrong sequence. But hey, it all seems to be coming together now :-) My mum kindly offered to alter the canopy so it'll fit. It now just depends on when we can get it to her... But surely we won't have any rain this summer?!?...

  3. P.S.: If you look closely in the "nearly finished" picture, you will be able to spot a wooden pole sticking out of the ivy at the back: that's one of the anchoring points for the canopy.
