Vor einer Woche haben wir ein Tretrad für Willem bestellt, das prompt am Dienstag geliefert wurde. Mücki war ganz aufgeregt, als er morgens den Karton gesehen hat, und musste es abends als er vom Kindergarten wieder zuhaus war gleich im Haus und Garten ausprobieren. Seit gestern ist er mit blauem Fahrradhelm voll ausgestattet und so haben wir dieses Wochenende die ersten Exkursionen durch die Nachbarschaft gemacht. Wie man sieht, er findet's prima!

We ordered a balance bike for Willem last weekend. It arrived during the week and Willem had to try it out promptly in the house and garden. Yesterday, we finally bought him a helmet and so we were finally equipped to explore the neighbourhood on two wheels. As you can see, he is loving it!

Mei liaba — Oh dear

Mannomann, es ist verboten lange her, dass wir etwas gebloggt haben. Als Entschuldigung führe ich die üblichen Verdächtigen an: Arbeit, Arbeit, Arbeit, erschöpft auf dem Sofa nach der Arbeit, und dann einfach keine Inspiration, irgendetwas halbwegs Interessantes zu schreiben. Nichtsdestotrotz, die letzten drei Monate waren nicht ereignislos.

Eggselent egg hunt!

Zu Ostern haben wir im Garten Ostereier versteckt, Willem hat massenhaft Eier gefunden, vor allem weil wir die gefundenen immer wieder versteckt haben, ohne dass er es gemerkt hat. Dann waren Theas Eltern zu Besuch, und vor zwei Wochen hat Ghita uns besucht. Unser umgestaltetes Vorderzimmer und das neue Schlafsofa haben also schon einige Einsätze hinter sich, und es bewährt sich als gutes Gästezimmer.

Was die Arbeit angeht, stehen der Laborumzug, eine Konferenz in Mailand und ziemlich viel Lehre auf dem Zettel. Gestern war die letzte Examenkonferenz und damit hat sich Lehre für die nächsten 3 Monate mehr oder weniger erledigt - bis auf zwei Projektstudenten, die noch ein paar Wochen im Labor sind.

Oh dear, is it really that long since we blogged what is going on? Well, the usual excuses: work, work, work, being tired after work, and then just not having the inspiration to post something halfway interesting. That is not to say that nothing has been going on. So what has been happening?

Spaziergang mit Oma und Opa zu Besuch - Walk with nan and granddad

Let's start off with Easter: we introduced Willem to an Easter Egg hunt. He was quite keen and must have found some 50 eggs or thereabouts, not realising that we kept hiding the ones he found over and over again, first in our garden, then later at a BBQ with Annie and Marc. Then Thea's parents came over for a visit, coinciding with the royal wedding. A couple of weeks ago, Ghita was here for a long weekend.

Workwise, I have moved my lab back to the main campus of the University, which has been quite disrupting, along with the increased teaching activities this year. As a getaway, I managed to go to a conference in Milan for a week in mid May. Today has finally been the last day of term, ending with the exam board meeting and so teaching is pretty much done except for some research students who will be in the lab for a few more weeks. So work has seriously been stressful for both of us, but hopefully with term over and the summer period starting, it will be less so for the next few weeks and we will have a little more time and inspiration to give you some news from the island.

Heute war ein toller Frühlingstag! Als ich nach dem Frühstück die Tür zum Garten aufgemacht habe, gab es für Willem kein Halten mehr. Wir haben den Tag grösstenteils im Garten verbracht. Es gab viel aufzuräumen, Tisch und Stühle mussten dringend vom Winterpeek befreit werden, und Willems Sandkiste brauchte auch einen Frühjahrsputz. Er fand es prima, und hat danach begeistert davon Gebrauch gemacht und mit Korjian Sandkuchen gebacken.



Finally, we had a great spring day today, which we spent mostly in the garden. Willem was immediately drawn out and into the garden when I opened the door after breakfast. There was plenty of tidying up to be done, garden furniture and paving needed a good spring clean, and Willem's sandpit also got a good wash. He enjoyed pottering about with mum and dad and happily played in the sandpit with Korjian baking sand cakes.

Butterlinge — Schmetterflies?

Yep, wir waren auch etwas verwirrt! Glücklicherweise wurde es uns bald klar, worum es Willem ging, denn er zeigte auf ein Bild mit Schmetterlingen. Die erste Sprach-Chimäre, die uns bei ihm aufgefallen ist. Normalerweise ist er erstaunlich sicher im Trennen von Deutsch und Englisch.

Unser fabulöses neues Zimmer - New stylish front room

Was ist sonst noch neu? Wir haben vor einigen Wochen unser vorderes Zimmer aufmöbeln lassen. Wir machen ja dieser Tage nix mehr selber, weil es sonst NIE fertig würde - und auch zugegebenermaßen nicht ganz so gut aussähe. Wir haben nun also ein hübsches kleines Juwel von Zimmer, mit einem viktorianischen gußeisernen Kamin und eingebauten Regalen in den Nischen rechts und links vom Kaminsims (vielen Dank an Megan für den Super-Tip mit den seitlichen Regalschienen! Voll klasse!).

Das Zimmer ist jetzt komplett ausgestattet mit neuem Schlafsofa und fungiert daher auch als unser neues Gästezimmer. Eingeweiht wurde es von Angelika, die uns letztes Wochenende besucht hat. Wir gehen mal davon aus, dass sie nicht nur aus Höflichkeit gesagt hat, sie hätte super geschlafen. Die Warteliste für weitere Besucher ist hiermit eröffnet!...

Yes, we were a little confused at first as well, but had the benefit of Willem showing us a flash card with butterflies. So, this one was an incident of a bilingual chimera, he does not produce many of those, in fact he is fairly good in separating English and German.

What else is new? Two weeks ago we got the front room done, meaning we had it done for us, as these days we would not get round to doing anything at all (and the results are generally more satisfying than with DIY). It now boasts a new, Victorian style cast iron fireplace and built-in shelves in the alcoves (many thanks to Megs for the invaluable tip with the shelving strips! They're ace!!). We complemented that with a new 2-seater sofa bed, so the front room now doubles up as our new guest room, It was tested and approved by Angelika who visited us for a couple of days last weekend. We'll assume she didn't just say she slept like a log to be polite ;-) I declare the waiting list for future visitors officially opened!...

Heute war Willems 2. Geburtstag. Wir konnten es schon gar nicht mehr erwarten, da wir uns so darauf gefreut haben, dass er seine grosse Lego-Duplo Eisenbahn auspackt, die seit Wochen im vorderen Zimmer auf ihren ersten Einsatz wartete. Das Warten hat sich gelohnt: Willem quietschte beim Auspacken vor lauter Entzücken!

Zunächst musste der Teppich im Wohnzimmer an eine andere Stelle gelegt werden, da das Verlegen der Gleise eine glatte Unterlage verlangte. Nachdem die Gleisbauarbeiten beendet waren, dauerte es nicht lange bevor Willem die Regie übernahm, den Zug auf die Gleise stellte und die batteriebetriebene Lok per Knopfdruck in Bewegung setzte.

Noch ein König - Another King

Auch beim Schlafengehen ist ein neues Kapitel aufgeschlagen worden. Seit heute hat Willem eine richtige Bettdecke und zum ersten Mal anstatt eines Strampelanzugs einen Pyjama an, und wie man sieht, er findet's fantastisch.

Guckguck - Peepo

Im Kindergarten hat Mücki jetzt den 'Umzug' in den Raum der grossen Kinder (2-5) begonnen. Es ist toll zu sehen, wie er täglich Fortschritte beim Eingewöhnen macht. Nachdem er zuächst nur für 1-2 Stunden vom Baby-Raum aus zu Besuch bei den Grossen war, wurden die Exkursionen immer etwas länger, wurde dann auch dort zu mittag gegessen, Mittagsschlaf gehalten, auch nachmittags dort gespielt, bis er heute zum allerersten Mal morgens gar nicht mehr in den Baby-Raum gegangen ist. Das ist einerseits schön aber auch zugleich traurig, da es bedeutet, dass er die gewohnte Umgebung des Baby-Raums und die netten Kindergärtnerinnen, besonders Dawn und Lindsey, die für uns zur erweiterten Familie gehören, jetzt zurück lässt.

Mittagessen bei den Grossen - big boy's lunch

It was Willem's 2nd Birthday today. We have been excitedly looking forward to this for weeks, as it meant that finally the new Lego train set got it's first outing at last. The long wait was worth it: Willem squeaked with delight when he unpacked the box.

After we had completed all the track works, it didn't take long until Willem would take charge by putting the train onto the tracks and managing to push the button that would set the battery operated engine into motion.

We've also opened a new chapter at bedtime: our big boy is now in big boy PJs rather than romper suits - and he's now got his own duvet courtesy of the Richartz kids who kindly donated this to their little friend. So kind! Thank you!! As you can see from the pictures, Willem absolutely loves it. And for once he didn't fuss at bedtime (probably at least partly to be attributed to the fact that he was too exhausted to kick up a stink. Even more exhausted than usual, that is). Fingers crossed for a quiet night!...

At nursery, Willem is in the process of moving to the big kids' room. He has been spending more and more time over there in the last couple of weeks and has taken to it like a duck to water. Today was the first day that Hendrik dropped him off in there without first going to the baby room. Until a few days ago this would have still caused tears, but today he was ready for it. A milestone. We're glad he likes it so much in the big kids' room, but we're also shedding a secretive tear that this means we won't see that much of everyone in the baby room, especially Dawn and Lindsey who seem to have become parts of our extended family... The move probably bothers Thea more than it does Willem, though...

Well, we'll now get the Häagen Dazs out and enjoy a quiet night on the sofa. All that sitting around on the floor perched next to rail tracks is poison to 40-year old backsides...
