Die Mangels Schäfer Rasselbande hatte viel Spass - Willem and cousins had loads of fun together

Letztes Wochenende hatten wir Blitz-Besuch von Annemarie, Christopher, Henri und Helena, die sich die Londoner Museen anschauen wollten. Es war herrlich wuselig und Willem, Henri und Helena hatten eine wunderbare Zeit. Wir Erwachsenen waren die meiste Zeit so gut wie abgemeldet, während die Kids in der Sandkiste gespielt haben oder mit der Lego-Eisenbahn. Da hatten sich drei gefunden! Wir hatten etwas Sorge, dass unser Haus zu klein sein könnte für sieben Personen, aber wir sind erstaunlich gut klargekommen.

Last weekend we had a lightning visit from Annemarie, Christopher, Helena and Henri. We had a fabulous time and Willem, Henri and Helena got on like a house on fire. Us adults were completely superfluous while the kids got on with the important stuff like playing in the sandpit and building a Lego trainset. Three of a kind! We had been slightly worried that our bijoux house might be far too small to cope with seven people, but amazingly it all went rather smoothly.

Saisonstart — Matchday 6

Phänomenal! Totgesagte leben länger: Das scheint dieses Jahr wieder auf den SVW zuzutreffen. Nachdem die Saison katastrophal angefangen hat, mit dem Pokalaus gegen Weissichnichtmehrundgucksauchnichtnach, untypisch öffentlich ausgetragenem Zwist im Verein, nun dass.

Erinnert an den Saisonstart von 2003/04, wo der SVW das letzte mal nach 6 Spieltagen so gut dastand und sowohl Meisterschaft und Pokal gewann, die Saison aber mit dem Ausscheiden im UEFA Cup Quali (aka UI Cup) gegen Pasching begann.

Wenn die Tabellenführung evtl auch nur von kurzer Dauer sein könnte (obwohl das Papierkorborakel eine FCB Niederlage auf Schalke vorhersagt!), es besteht wieder Grund 'Lebenslang Grün-Weiss' aufzulegen und Hoffnung für die Saison 2011/12.

Absolutely fab! There is life in the old dog yet. After a disastrous start to the season that saw our team crash out of the cup competition against a third tier side whose name I don't remember (and refuse to look up), as well as plenty of dissonance within the club, we are back at the top of the league!

Matched in recent history only by the beginning of the 2003/04 campaign which also famously saw us exit against an unknown side (that time 'Pasching' from Austria - and in last stage of UEFA Intertoto Cup!), this season let's us reminisce about the fantastic season that saw our team win the domestic double. The Werder hymn 'Lebenslang gruen weiss' is back in the CD-player.

Zelten — Camping

Die erste Nacht im Zelt verbracht - After the first night in the tent

Seitdem wir vor ein paar Wochen im Campingmarkt durch die Zeltausstellung gegangen sind, ist bei uns allen der Campingwahn ausgebrochen. Am liebsten würden wir uns ins Auto setzen und 12 Stunden nach Nordwest Schottland fahren, aber für einen ersten Campingtrip mit Willem wäre das etwas weit. Also haben wir uns nach Empfehlungen für Campingplätze in der Umgebung umgehöhrt und sind dann letztes Wochenende nach Uffington gefahren (etwa 1h 15min Richtung Süden), wo eine Hügelseite mit einer prähistorischen Abbildung eines weissen Pferdes versehen ist - das Uffington White Horse.

Freunde aus Kenilworth waren auch - zufälligerweise - zum gleichen Zeltplatz unterwegs, so dass wir uns dort verabredet haben.  Willem fand das alles prima, insbesondere hat er mit Mya seiner Altersgenossin die meiste Zeit kichernd im Zelt verbracht. Wir Eltern hatten allerdings alle eine unruhige Nacht: der Schlaf war häufig unterbrochen, entweder durch Party-Geräusche, weinende Kinder oder aus Sorge, dass man durch herumrollen in der Nacht den Nachwuch unter sich begräbt.

Having visited the tent exhibition at a retailer for outdoor articles recently, we have thought obsessively about going on a camping trip. If time and distance were no issues to consider, I would love to go up to the North West of Scotland, but a 12 hour car journey might be a little excessive for Willem's camping initiation. Hence, after canvassing friends for suitable campsites, we set off to Uffington which is a mere 1h and 15 min to the South. It is the site of a spectecular bronze age white horse that adorns the hillside, which is best viewed on pictures (walking along it is fairly pointless as you cannot get the whole picture).

Friends from Kenilworth also happened to have the same destination and so we arranged to meet there. Camping was very exciting for Willem and he and Mya (his pal from K'worth) had a whale of a time, mostly spent in the tent - giggling! Us oldies, we had a night of interrupted sleep, due to party noise, crying kids, and the constant fear of smothering the little one by rolling around uncontrollably at night. In the end, it was a success and we hope to have another session after the proper holidays.

Vor einer Woche haben wir ein Tretrad für Willem bestellt, das prompt am Dienstag geliefert wurde. Mücki war ganz aufgeregt, als er morgens den Karton gesehen hat, und musste es abends als er vom Kindergarten wieder zuhaus war gleich im Haus und Garten ausprobieren. Seit gestern ist er mit blauem Fahrradhelm voll ausgestattet und so haben wir dieses Wochenende die ersten Exkursionen durch die Nachbarschaft gemacht. Wie man sieht, er findet's prima!

We ordered a balance bike for Willem last weekend. It arrived during the week and Willem had to try it out promptly in the house and garden. Yesterday, we finally bought him a helmet and so we were finally equipped to explore the neighbourhood on two wheels. As you can see, he is loving it!

Mei liaba — Oh dear

Mannomann, es ist verboten lange her, dass wir etwas gebloggt haben. Als Entschuldigung führe ich die üblichen Verdächtigen an: Arbeit, Arbeit, Arbeit, erschöpft auf dem Sofa nach der Arbeit, und dann einfach keine Inspiration, irgendetwas halbwegs Interessantes zu schreiben. Nichtsdestotrotz, die letzten drei Monate waren nicht ereignislos.

Eggselent egg hunt!

Zu Ostern haben wir im Garten Ostereier versteckt, Willem hat massenhaft Eier gefunden, vor allem weil wir die gefundenen immer wieder versteckt haben, ohne dass er es gemerkt hat. Dann waren Theas Eltern zu Besuch, und vor zwei Wochen hat Ghita uns besucht. Unser umgestaltetes Vorderzimmer und das neue Schlafsofa haben also schon einige Einsätze hinter sich, und es bewährt sich als gutes Gästezimmer.

Was die Arbeit angeht, stehen der Laborumzug, eine Konferenz in Mailand und ziemlich viel Lehre auf dem Zettel. Gestern war die letzte Examenkonferenz und damit hat sich Lehre für die nächsten 3 Monate mehr oder weniger erledigt - bis auf zwei Projektstudenten, die noch ein paar Wochen im Labor sind.

Oh dear, is it really that long since we blogged what is going on? Well, the usual excuses: work, work, work, being tired after work, and then just not having the inspiration to post something halfway interesting. That is not to say that nothing has been going on. So what has been happening?

Spaziergang mit Oma und Opa zu Besuch - Walk with nan and granddad

Let's start off with Easter: we introduced Willem to an Easter Egg hunt. He was quite keen and must have found some 50 eggs or thereabouts, not realising that we kept hiding the ones he found over and over again, first in our garden, then later at a BBQ with Annie and Marc. Then Thea's parents came over for a visit, coinciding with the royal wedding. A couple of weeks ago, Ghita was here for a long weekend.

Workwise, I have moved my lab back to the main campus of the University, which has been quite disrupting, along with the increased teaching activities this year. As a getaway, I managed to go to a conference in Milan for a week in mid May. Today has finally been the last day of term, ending with the exam board meeting and so teaching is pretty much done except for some research students who will be in the lab for a few more weeks. So work has seriously been stressful for both of us, but hopefully with term over and the summer period starting, it will be less so for the next few weeks and we will have a little more time and inspiration to give you some news from the island.
