Sofa Samstag — Sofa Saturday?

Willem und Hendrik experimentieren mit der Photobooth und Webcam des Mac- Willem and Hendrik checking out Photobooth and Webcam of the Mac

Sofa Samstag?

Sofa Saturday? Yes and no. Willem and I have just spent about an hour on the sofa. He's been mostly asleep, while I have had an eye at the snooker. I have hardly been at work this week, and consequently my Sofa Saturday is going to be over soon, as I am heading to the office to catch up on work.

It has been one of those weeks: Monday and Tuesday I have been off work with a stomach bug. Tuesday night, Willem got a fever and his coughing got worse again too. So off to the GP on Wednesday and stayed home with him the rest of the day. Back to work/nursery on Thursday from whence I had to pick him up early as the fever had made a return. Friday we stayed home once more, so that he could get some rest.

Since last Sunday, our microwave has been for repair and warming foods and milk for Willem has become much less straightforward. We were looking forward to a loan microwave which was delivered to us this morning, hurray! Unfortunately, it did not even work for 10 sec, when smoke came out we had to switch it off. It is one of those weeks!

Stollen

Gutes Gelingen!

Same thing every year: When the shops start kitting out around late September/early October with Christmas decorations and, first and foremost, sweets and chocolates for the festive season, I shake my head in disbelief. Yesterday, though, I was shocked to realise that it is only 4 1/2 weeks until Christmas now. Don't ask about presents...

That means, it is about time to get that German Christstollen done. This has become a bit of a tradition since I baked one for the first time all those years ago when we studied in Glasgow. My intention is usually to get this done at the beginning of November, but as usual that time has passed.

Ingredients:
For the fruit-almond mix...
  • 250g raisins
  • 70g sultanas
  • 100g mixed peel
  • 125g chopped almonds
  • rum, approx 1 shot glass (and a good swig extra...)
In a bowl, mix all the ingredients and pour over rum, mix some more, cover (you don't want that alcohol to escape) and keep overnight.

For the dough:
  • 500g flour
  • 2-3 sachets dried yeast
  • 130g sugar
  • 125 ml milk (that's what the recipe I have states, but I always have to add more...)
  • 250g butter (cut into flakes and make sure it is fairly soft)
For the topping:
  • 100g molten butter
  • icing sugar

Method:
  1. Prepare fruit-almond mix the day before. Mix flour with sugar and dried yeast, add warm milk, and knead until you have a homogenous dough that is not too sticky. As pointed out above, I usually have to add more milk than stated, but I have never bothered to make a note of how much is ideal. Could well be another 100ml.
  2. Keep dough warm in a covered bowl and let rise for approx 30 min
  3. Add butter, then fruit mix and keep kneading until homogenous. Add flour if necessary to get a good consistency (i.e. not too sticky).
  4. Keep warm in a covered bowl and let rise for approx 30-45 min
  5. Knead through again. On a greased or paper lined baking tray, form a rectangular dough slab about 3 cm high, fold one half over the other along the long axis. Cover with a tea towel and let rise for 30 min
  6. Bake in the middle of a preheated oven (no fan), 20 min at 200 centigrade, then reduce temperature to 175 and bake another 35-45 min. The dough will spread out a bit, you can try to reign it in using a 'collar' made out of folded aluminium foil. If it gets too brown at the top, cover with a piece of aluminium foil.
  7. Take out of oven, while still warm, spread butter all over it, then put a good helping of icing sugar on top.
Hope you like it.

Gute Nachrichten — Mum's better!

Due to excellent response to treatment in hospital, my mum has improved rapidly over the last few days, the extent of which leaves us speechless and grateful. Back in the UK now, I hope she will continue to improve and returns home soon.

Schlechte Nachrichten — Bad News

We haven't been posting for a while, hence I thought I'd let everyone know we're still there... Things are a bit difficult at the moment. Not only do we seem to be permanently sick and catching every bug that's going round, but now Hendrik's mum has suffered a stroke and Hendrik has flown to Bremen to be with her. We're praying that she'll get better soon.

We would have liked to post something more uplifting, but luck isn't exactly chasing us at the minute. But hey, who knows, maybe things are looking different when we're blogging next?...

Neuland — Off the Beaten Track

Fehlanzeige! - En lieu of birdies

Parkplatzfedervieh - a sympathetic robin

Why is it that one uses the same old tracks day in day out? Well, leaving those that you are familiar with will almost certainly get you lost in England's beautiful countryside. Despite striving to know my way around in the area where I live, I have not yet mastered the countryside of Warwickshire. The area west of Leamington is particularly troublesome. Nevertheless, I ventured into that very direction today, as I was presented with a beautiful day on which Thea and Willem were out shopping with Ghita and Karla who are visiting us from Germany over the weekend. I chose to go to Ufton, where the map indicated a nature reserve, raising my hopes of 'shooting' some wildlife with my camera. Ufton Fields is a former limestone quarry with several little lakes and dense vegetation, but it did not live up to expectations. Just before getting back to the car park, a robin was sympathetic with my plight and sat still for me to take the one and only decent picture of a bird today.

Chesterton windmill

I then left the car park to find a way back home, without using a map as the area I went into was not covered by the OS sheet that I had with me. Needless to say that I got lost once. No harm done, I stumbled across this beautiful old mill, which I have seen on photos previously, not realising that it is so close to home: Chesterton windmill (built 1632).
