Familienbesuch — Family Visitors

We've had a splendid week here, the weather has been absolutely marvellous. On Thursday Dorothea's parents arrived to inspect their third grandchild. Coincidentally, Chris (Dorothea's brother) was also in the area for some training and dropped in on Friday evening for a short visit, before going home to Germany this afternoon. So we had a full house and today used the good weather to get out in the fresh air to do a turn through Leamington in the brilliant sunshine. All the while Willem has been showing off with his best behaviour to impress grandma, grandad, and uncle, although at times he has also been a little grizzly due to trapped wind.

Ein schöner Tag — A Lovely Day

Our friend Corinne had taken the afternoon off work yesterday to go to Stratford with Thea (THANK YOU, CORINNE!!!). Thea's mission was to treat herself to some new post-pregnancy clothes while Corinne happily pushed Willem around in the pram. It was a gloriously sunny spring day and people in Stratford were completely chilled. Everyone just seemed to try to enjoy the day while it lasted and catch as many rays of sunshine as possible.

The evening saw Willem's second outing to a pub: we met up with our friends from the antenatal class, this time joined by Kedi, our NCT teacher, for whom it was the first time to meet all the babies.

Frühlingserwachen — Spring is in the Air

Spaziergang in Jephson Gardens — Walk in Jephson Gardens

Today, it suddenly felt like spring. Sunshine, a warm breeze, and the sweet smell of blooming Snowy Mespilus here and there. We might have picked slightly warm attire for our little walk, but we encountered several sparsely clad Brits, who looked like they could have been beamed to Leamington from somewhere tropical...

Anyway, after a more or less uneventful week here are the statistical data:

- Willem was an amazing 55.5 cm long last Sunday (that's 1'10" for those of you who don't do metric)
- He weighed 4600 g on Thursday (that's 10 lb 2 oz in imperial speak)
- Hendrik cycled to work twice last week (which is as often as he managed in the whole of last year – hoorray!!)

Danke für Karten und Geschenke — Thanks for all your good wishes and prezzies

Willem — 1 month old tomorrow

Just a big 'Thanks' to all of you for wishing us and Willem well, and sending emails, texts, and all those wonderful cards and presents. The window sill has filled up and the cards are precipitously close to a major avalanche. Thea being Thea, has already bought a new thing (wire rope and some magnets) to put the cards stylishly on display - I wonder where she will fit this...

On a different topic, I find it hard to believe that it is four weeks since we went into hospital for Thea to be induced and that Willem will be 1 month old tomorrow. Having been true to my resolution to cycle into work (managed today, 11 miles one way!), I am sure I can justify that piece of celebratory cake.

Die Raupe Nimmersatt — The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Was mir völlig fehlt, ist etwas Bewegung.

G'day from the island!

I figure it is time for an update, given that the previous post suggested we were not having the best of times and some of you have got worried. So, in a nutshell: things are getting better (or our resilience is improving...). Both Thea and Willem have been discharged by the midwives, meaning that they are well enough and need a little less attention now. We have already had a visit from the Health Visitor, who is taking over from the midwives now.

After Willem had lost a bit too much weight, we started topping him up with formula. This has worked well and he has been piling on the ounces since then. On Sunday a week ago he was back to birth weight (3670g), and on Tuesday he was already at 3870g. He feeds like the Very Hungry Caterpillar and he has already grown out of his first set of clothes; he is doing well.

I have gone back to work and get the odd sympathetic glance by colleagues who have been there before (ie. sleep deprivation). Besides sleep I am lacking exercise. I have not been to the gym for a good three weeks now. Hence the decision to cycle to work again now and again, let's see how often I will really manage.
